Hiking in Geilo

A Paradise for hiking in the mountains

In Geilo, you will find hiking trails that are suitable for everyone, with a panoramic view of the Norwegian mountains.

Here, you can pick nature experiences from the top shelf. Take the shortcut to the Hardangervidda plateau with the chairlift up from Vestlia, or take an electric bike up to the foot of the Hallingskarvet mountains and go to the top, or enjoy yourself around the Ustedalsfjorden lake, within walking distance from the village center. There are so many possibilities in Geilo!

A couple of hours of close contact with nature is an exciting journey for young and old people. The longer trips offer elevation, mountain lakes, silence, and as many kilometers as you want to register on your training app. Rest areas and cabins, which offer a well-deserved break and food, are the reward that awaits those who reach their goal.

Hiking works as therapy for body and soul, so let yourself be inspired by the mountain's play of colours, silence, and the views that appear around every corner. Enjoy good food and drink on your return, and feel how well the mountain takes care of you.

Camping in Geilo

Free camping/tenting is considered to be traveling and staying in nature, and this is regulated by the Norwegian Outdoor Activities Act "Everyone is allowed to travel and stay in the outback in Norway. The right is a free public good and part of our cultural heritage." But there are some rules for accommodation in the outback:

  • You can camp/sleep at least 150 meters from the nearest inhabited house or cabin.
  • You can camp/sleep for up to 2 days in the same place, longer if you are on high mountains or far from built-up areas.
  • Show respect for each other, the animals and nature. Always take your trash with you!

Mushroom and Berry picking

Geilo is a wonderful place for picking mushrooms. In the forests, and around the Ustedalsfjorden lake, you will find many different mushroom species; and among them, many are edible. Remember that you should always have a good knowledge of the mushrooms before you pick them. When in doubt, do not pick them and consult a digital mushroom control before picking, or research some good mushroom books before going.

The areas in Geilo are full of berries. In late summer, you can pick kilo after kilo of cloudberries, lingonberries and blueberries. Perfect if you love homemade jams, or if you are going back to the cabin to fry waffles after a nice, long trip in the mountains!
