Hallingstuene
Hallingstuene is a renowned restaurant run by chef couple Frode and Berit. The restaurant celebrates traditional Norwegian cuisine, with a strong focus on local ingredients and authentic flavours.
Caves São João – A Century of Portuguese Wine History
Caves São João was founded in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa. Today, it is the oldest family-owned wine producer still in operation in Anadia, in the heart of the Bairrada wine region. For more than a century, the family has remained faithful to one philosophy: wine needs time.
As early as the 1930s, the winery began producing sparkling wine using the traditional method. Towards the end of the 1950s, the iconic Frei João wine range was launched – a wine that is now regarded as one of Bairrada’s great classics.
What perhaps distinguishes Caves São João most from other producers is its unique cellars. Rather than releasing all their wines while they are still young, generations of the family have chosen to preserve the finest vintages under optimal ageing conditions. The result is one of Portugal’s most impressive wine cellars, where bottles from several decades ago continue to mature in the producer’s own cellars.
The house’s commitment to tradition and quality continues to this day. São João Espumante Reserva will be launched at Vinmonopolet in November 2026, following a successful tender in which it received the highest sensory evaluation as well as the most competitive price. Made using the traditional method and aged for 48 months on the lees, the wine will be released in November.
This evening, you will have the opportunity to discover both the history and the breadth of Caves São João through a carefully selected range of wines – offering an insight into why the producer has remained a reference in Portuguese wine for generations.
