Light Contemplation – Exhibition at Geilo Kulturkyrkje

On Palm Sunday Saturday, March 28 at 14:00 (2:00 PM), the painting exhibition of Bjørn Strandenes will open. The artist will be present at the opening, and there will be a musical performance. The exhibition runs until Saturday, May 30.

Geilo Kulturkyrkje once again becomes a center for art and painting – this time featuring an exhibition of paintings by Bjørn Strandenes.

This is how the professor of art history Gunnar Danbolt describes the artist:
“In Strandenes’ paintings the result is neither clear figuration nor pure abstraction. He has positioned himself within the Norwegian modernist tradition, with roots going back to the painters of the Paris School.

His paintings are generally dark, much like the Norwegian landscape in winter. Here and there we glimpse faint reflections of water or dark contours of mountains, and occasionally sharp flashes of light from snow or sea foam – or perhaps the reflection of a forsaken sun.

Yet perhaps it is only the sharp contrasts of color that create illusions of something we do not actually see.”

About his painting technique
Strandenes gradually approached painting from an unusual perspective – that of a plaster craftsman. He has an artistic background with specialization in various art-theoretical directions, with practical emphasis on traditional painting techniques such as oil painting and Venetian lime painting for sculpture.

He has also studied traditional techniques through work with the collection at the The Royal Danish Cast Collection.
