The Gunderson Collection
At Vestlia, we have a deep appreciation for beautiful art, and our walls are adorned with masterpieces by a variety of artists, making your stay a unique cultural experience as well. The art tour is available for groups of 10 or more and can be booked upon request.
A remarkable collection of art and Norwegian folk antiques is displayed throughout Vestlia Resort, located in the mountain village of Geilo. The collection belongs to Pål Gundersen, the founder of The Gundersen Collection, which includes one of Norway’s most important private collections of prints by Edvard Munch. The Munch collection features numerous hand-coloured works, and the collection also includes more than 50 pieces by the renowned Norwegian painter Peder Balke.
The hotel lobby is home to Norway’s largest collection of traditional drinking vessels. Some of these unique pieces date back to the 16th century and represent an important part of Norway’s cultural heritage and folk art traditions.
In the lobby, guests can also admire paintings by Kai Fjell and Axel Ender, as well as graphic works by Edvard Munch—an artistic treasure we are particularly proud to showcase.
The Kai Fjell Hall is adorned with beautiful paintings by the celebrated artist Kai Fjell. A leading figure in Norway’s romantic-expressionist movement of the 1930s, Fjell stood in clear contrast to the more dominant formalist trends of his time. Before the age of 30, he was already being hailed as “Edvard Munch’s successor.” One critic described him as “the chivalrous interpreter of women, the poet of fertility, longing, and at times melancholy Eros.”
In addition, the motifs throughout our Adventure Pool are inspired by the famous fairy-tale illustrations of Theodor Kittelsen, bringing Norwegian folklore to life in a unique setting.
That is what we call great art.
