Ski Resort in Norway !

Geilo View

Geilo, is well known for its nature and the impressive skiing courses. In the bars and hotels at the Geilo center you can choose any after-skiing activity you prefer. You can also find skiing courses including lit courses for night outings. It is primarily a ski resort town, but also offers summer activities. Geilo is in a valley with mountain ranges on each side. The center of the town lies at 800 meters above sea level, and its highest point is 1178 meters above sea level. It is 250km from Oslo and 260km from Bergen. A train station (Geilo stasjon) with roughly five trains a day going to either Bergen (to the west) or Oslo (to the east) serves for many tourists. The closest airport is Geilo Airport, Dagali (24km away), while the closest airport that accepts international flights is Fagernes Airport. Geilo has three lakes, Slåttahølen, Vestlefjorden, and Ustedalsfjorden, by far the largest of the three. Geilo Ski Resort consists of 20 lifts of various kinds. The lifts have a capacity of over 25,000 passengers per hour if all goes to full. Here you rarely get in line, and there are 40 slopes varying in difficulty and length.

Over more than 100 years Geilo is welcomming visitors and ski tourists. Modern ski tourism began in 1935 when one of Norway’s first slalom races was held in Geilo. Since then there has been an exciting development into the modern, all round winter sports resort of today. Significant factors and events that have characterised the development of Geilo over the years include the opening of the Bergen Railway in 1909, an active ski school from as early as the 1950s and Norway’s first piste machine in 1972. The first chair lift, Geilo Taubane, opened in 1954. At the same time, there has been a continuous upgrading of ski lifts, overnight accommodation facilities, activities and service. The first hotel in Geilo, Gjeilo Hotell, was founded in 1880. Haugs Hotell opened somewhat later, in 1909 – the same year as the opening of the Bergen Railway and Dr. Holms Hotel. Source: Geilo.no
