Kicksled – a Healthy Push-Off
The Kicksled World Championships, which has been held in Geilo since 1982, is a unique event in many ways. It is an informal, social, and traditional event. It’s based on one of the oldest means of transportation we know in this country, Sweden and in Finland. This has engaged people since 1982 to create a populous and beloved winter carnival. Spark WC is one of the highlights in Geilo!
The content of the Spark WC has varied over the years it has been held. Spark WC, today, appears as a winter carnival. There are mainly 3 classes for adults and a separate Spark WC for children. The time of the Kicksled WC on the other hand, has mostly been the last weekend in January. This for a simple reason – at this time it’s guaranteed kicksled conditions.
Kicksled World Championships - A Green Event:
Geilo is a Sustainable Travel Destination, Visit Geilo AS is an Environmental Lighthouse Company, and Spark WC is a Green Event! We must document to the Environmental Lighthouse Foundation that requirements for working environment, purchasing, energy, transport, waste, emissions and aesthetics have been met.
We want to encourage everyone to use public transport, get on their bikes, or go by foot, whenever possible. For the journey to and from Geilo, we recommend taking the train. See information about timetables at VY.
We can also recommend the app Entur for information about timetables for all types of public transport.
We want it to be easy for participants and visitors to sort their waste during the Kicksled WC, and encourage everyone to use the recycling station in the pedestrian zone.
Rent a Kicksled:
In Geilo, you can rent kicksleds at the Tourist Information in the center of Geilo. It’s a sustainable means of transport that is both fun and good for the environment!
“The World's Biggest Kicksled”
In 2011, it was the 30th time the Spark World Championships were held in Geilo. At that time, a 4.53 meter high kicksled was made to celebrate this year's event. At the time, this was the biggest kicksled in the world.
The friends from the Sandefjord Snakk, Snaps and Sparkstøttingforening participated with the big kicksled and pulled it for 600 meters in one of the competitions in the Spark WC. A tractor helped them up the hill. After the competition, they donated it to Geilo as an anniversary gift for the 30-year-old Spark World Championships. The kicksled is now at the side of the FV 40 highway, just below the center of Geilo. You can park at Geilojorden and take a picture with the kicksled if you wish.
